ARD and ZDF, Constantin, ProSiebenSat.1, Servus TV: media decision-makers present their sports strategies

Hamburg, 16 Mai 2013 - According to a survey conducted by the Federal Association of Private Broadcasters and Telemedia (VPRT) in 2012, people aged 14+ watch television for an average of 222 minutes per day. Television therefore maintains its high level in the battle with other types of media for the audience’s attention. Besides the new types of media, classic television business will also form a key focus at the SPONSORs Sports Media Summit in 2013. The TV industry’s significance is underlined by the countless broadcaster bosses, who could be won as speakers for the event. Among those due to appear on stage in Cologne are:

Discussion round: New partners, bundling and new formats: Here’s how I bring my sport to TV!

Martin Blank | Managing Director, Servus TV

What to expect:

  • The former managing director of Puls TV/Puls 4, a Vienna-based subsidiary of ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG.
  • Blank sums up: year one after purchase of the DEL rights.
  • Technically-speaking, a new league: DEL broadcasts with helicopter cameras, cable guys and in-goal cams.
  • What other German rights will the Red Bull broadcaster now acquire? And what is Servus TV’s strategy on the German market?

Dieter Gruschwitz | Head of Sports, ZDF

What to expect:

  • With the public broadcaster since 1996.
  • Gruschwitz has been responsible for the sports strategy at the ZDF headquarters in Mainz-Lerchenberg as the Head of Sports since 2005.
  • He began his journalistic career as an editor, reporter and presenter at Sender Freies Berlin (now RBB).
  • From dressage to swimming to the UEFA Champions League: Gruschwitz on the ZDF’s sports portfolio.
  • At football matches, he interviews the German Chancellor and national team coach, Joachim Löw, in the VIP area; on 5 June, he will be on hand to answer questions in Cologne.

    Associations explain their media strategies

Hamburg, 14 Mai 2013 - The calculation seems a simple one: sporting success also equates to success on TV. Yet this equation is not as straightforward and one-sided as it appears. Associations and sports rights holders often lack variables such as creativity and flexibility – in the scheduling of tournaments, for example. The “New approaches in Media” forum will consider how these aspects can best be enhanced:

1:1 chat: An association in upheaval: The DVV’s new marketing strategy

Thomas Krohne | President, German Volleyball Association (DVV)

    What to expect:

    • Co-founder of Munich-based agency, The Sportsman Media Group.
    • President of the German Volleyball Association (DVV) since 2012.
    • His primary aims for the DVV: financial independence and more consistent use of new media.
    • How does Krohne manage to uphold the Olympic success of the Brink/Reckermann German beach volleyball duo?

Discussion round: New partners, bundling and new formats: Here’s how I bring my sport to TV!

Mario Woldt | Performance Director, German Rowing Association (DRV)

    What to expect:

    • Sports director at the German Rowing Association (DRV) since 2010.
    • “Watersports weekend”: flexible scheduling means that the World Rowing Championships will be held at the same time as the Canoe Sprint World Championships in 2013 – with coverage by the ZDF!
    • Woldt is representative of the battle of the lesser-known sporting disciplines for greater coverage on TV.

Frank Lebert | Managing Director, Deutsche Leichtathletik Promotion- und Projektgesellschaft (DLP)

    What to expect:

    • Managing Director of the DLP, which holds the marketing rights for the German Athletics Association (DLV), since 2009.
    • Previously the sports marketing director at US sports outfitter, Nike.
    • A contract with SportA guarantees that the DLV will reach one million people every year thanks to fixed broadcasting times on the ARD and ZDF.
    • How does the prestigious Olympic discipline of athletics manage to retain the public’s interest in the time between Olympic Games?

Sponsorship activation where the customer is: online

Hamburg, 8 Mai 2013 - To arouse interest for brands and products among the young target group, it is increasingly important to seek out these potential customers where they actually interact: online and in social media. Florian Strauß is aware of this fact. The Managing Director of Ledavi with offices in Berlin and Munich advises brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Allianz. In Cologne, Strauß will provide answers to the question of “Online presence: A must, not a can – but how?”.

Similar to Ledavi’s customers, a growing number of companies are using sport as an advertising medium and extending their sponsorship to digital channels. Besides FC Bayern Munich’s two sponsors, UniCredit and Telekom with its subsidiary T-Online.de, Symantec will also demonstrate what other creative approaches are possible. The Norton brand of the provider of anti-virus software solutions sponsors football Bundesliga team, Borussia Dortmund. Karsten Jahn is responsible for the Bundesliga sponsorship deal believed to be one the ones with the greatest online focus. At the SPONSORs Sports Media Summit, the Director Consumer Marketing Central Europe will present a creative case study on “Keeping control of the (digital) field together: Norton’s digital sponsorship at BVB”.

Picture-Alliance portrays SPONSORs conferences in images

Hamburg, 13 March 2013 - The Frankfurt-based image agency dpa picture alliance has supported all SPONSORs conferences and events as the “Official Photo and Image Partner” since the start of 2013. Indeed, picture alliance was already responsible for the official conference documentation at SpoBiS 2013 and additionally developed the according thematically-appropriate sport motif for the room decor. At the 2013 SPONSORs Sports Media Summit due to take place in the Congress-Centrum Nord Koelnmesse, picture alliance will once again ensure that the relationship between sport and media is portrayed in the right light.

Application phase for the Sports Media Innovation Award now open

Hamburg, 13 March 2013 - The application phase opens today for the Sports Media Innovation Award, which SPONSORs is to confer this year for the third time.

Whether an entrepreneur, club, association, agency, media enterprise or developer, all those active in the sports media industry with an innovative idea are invited to submit an application from March 13 to April 12 – regardless of whether for a project of their own or that of a third party.

An online form is available on the conference website from today to apply. You will need to submit a brief summary (PDF; max. 2,500 characters) along with a detailed outline (PDF or PPT; max. 5 MB) of the concept. Moreover, an additional video can also be included with your entry should you so wish (MPEG/FLV).

Cooperation with the ANGA COM media trade fair

Hamburg, 26 February 2013 – This year, the SPONSORS Sports Media Summit (5 June 2013) will cooperate with the ANGA COM (4-6 June 2013), which will take place at the same time as the SPONSORs conference at the Koelnmesse exhibition centre. The ANGA COM is an expert trade fair and congress for broadband, cable and satellite and has, by its own admission, been Europe’s leading business platform in this field for more than ten years now. Among other advantages, the cooperation will also allow participants in the 2013 SPONSORs Sports Media Summit to attend the ANGA COM exhibition for free. Among the topics due to be covered at this year’s event count IPTV, Smart TV, multiscreen and video on-demand, hence it will constitute a compelling complement to the topics addressed at the SPONSORs Sports Media Summit. Besides the latest issues in the fields of sports rights, media policy, social media, digital sponsoring, CRM and data management, and e-commerce, the focus will also be on the football Bundesliga’s new media rights period from the 2013/14 season at the SPONSORs event.

    Premium partners extend their commitment

Hamburg, 2 February 2013 – “Countless decision-makers attend and excellent presentations are given, and we wish to position ourselves in this environment,” said Thomas Krohne (Managing Director, The Sportsman Media Group) at last year’s SPONSORS Sports Media Summit. And the Munich-based agency is once again present as a Premium Partner in this year. Premium partners CMS Hasche Sigle, Deutsche Telekom and Kicker online/Fußball.de have also renewed their partnerships and will support the conference in Cologne in 2013.

Sports Media Summit relocates to Cologne

Hamburg, 2 January 2013 – The 8th SPONSORS Sports Media Summit will take place on 5 June 2013 at the Congress-Centrum Koelnmesse for the first time. “Together with KölnKongress, we have successfully brought an important meet for the national and international sports scene to Cologne,” confirms Hans Rütten, Managing Director at Kölner Sportstätten GmbH. The move to the sports and media city of Cologne fits with the conference’s thematic focus and promises countless synergies: Cologne is home to numerous major media enterprises such as RTL and WDR, and renowned media conferences like the ANGA COM, dmexco and gamescom are also held in the media city. The metropolis on the Rhine additionally wishes to boost its image as a sports city. Kölner Sportstätten GmbH, a 100 percent subsidiary of the city of Cologne and future conference Host Partner, established the Sport Solution Cologne (SSC) department in 2011 – by its own admission, to entice “more sports events to Cologne”. The Rund um Köln classic cycling race and Tristar Triathlon are just two of the many attractive sporting events that the cathedral city hosts every year.

Henning Stiegenroth on the future of sport TV

Hamburg, 14 May 2012 – The question of the future of sport TV is frequently raised. Mobile devices mean media consumers are already able to access information and videos at all times and from any location. A growing number of viewers use an additional screen in parallel to their television, such as a tablet or PC, to exchange with others and obtain further information. But how can media companies use these to their advantage and also generate additional revenue?

Dr. Henning Stiegenroth (Head of Sports Marketing, Deutsche Telekom), who is also responsible for development of the LIGA total! pay TV channel, will share exclusive insights into the future of sport TV during his presentation. Conference participants can look forward to an intriguing discussion, as particularly LIGA total! has ventured into new fields in recent years with the introduction of “personal conferences” and interactive fan voting, and has shown itself to be extremely open to experiments.

“Sport & Law” forum: enhancing revenue with Smart TV and eGaming

Hamburg, 8 May 2012 –   The merging of Internet and television continues, as particularly so-called Hybrid/Smart TV shows. The value chain is enhanced by sports rights holders, media and advertisers as a consequence. Sebastian Cording (Partner, CMS Hasche Sigle) is convinced of Smart TV’s role in boosting advertising revenue. The lawyer will outline how new revenue models specifically in the field of sport can look and which legal issues clubs must be aware of in the “Sport & Law” forum

The growing trend among clubs to not sell match trademark rights to match developers, but rather to act as publishers themselves – cutting out the middlemen – and market matches also promises additional revenue. Schalke 04 is a pioneer in this field in Germany. Alexander Jobst (photo), Board Member for Marketing at the ‘Royal Blues’, will reveal his club’s approach in his presentation entitled “Playing for success: eGaming strategies of a football Bundesliga club”.

Other speakers in the “Sport & Law” forum:

    • Guido Baumhauer (Director of Distribution, Deutsche Welle)
    • Dr. Pietro Graf Fringuelli (Partner, CMS Hasche Sigle)

Alistair Kirkwood on the NFL’s success

Hamburg, 27 April 2012 – The football Bundesliga is well positioned both in terms of the turnover from the allocation of media rights and the viewer statistics. However the positive figures of other leagues and sporting disciplines pale by comparison with America’s professional football league, the NFL. The event organiser is therefore extremely pleased to have won Alistair Kirkwood, a recognised expert on the best marketed league in the world, as a speaker. The Managing Director of the NFL in England is familiar with the ins and outs of the NFL and will outline what other leagues can learn from it.

Latest since the recent contract signing, the National Football League appears to be in an entirely different league: just a few months ago, it renewed its contracts with the three largest TV channels (CBS, Fox and NBC) in advance for a total of nine years until 2023. The new contract that starts in 2014 will earn the NFL a total of around 20 billion euros. Alistair Kirkwood will be sure to capture participants’ attention when he takes to the Main Stage in the ISS Dome. His presentation is entitled “Leadership in Media: How NFL RedZone changes the game”

Here’s what the top industry decision-makers have to say about the Summit

“The conference is jam-packed with interesting presentations and excellent for meeting a large number of decision-makers in one place.”
Stefan Kürten, Director Sports & Business Division, EBU

“New Media” forum: HSV, Werder Bremen and Unicredit to present their online strategies

Hamburg, 25 April 2012 –  New media are a compelling new field for clubs and sponsors and, should the correct approach be adopted, can lead to significant additional turnover. The digital catalogue of requirements for club managers is increasingly diverse – from social media to club TV and design of a club website to new phenomena such as social gaming. The organiser is consequently all the more delighted to have won renowned industry experts from clubs and sponsors as speakers for the “New Media” forum.

Lars P. Reckwitz (photo), Head of Content and Media Strategy at Hamburger SV, shares insights into how the Bundesliga club utilises the digital media network. The 43-year-old held leading roles at Sportfive for 12 years before joining Hamburger SV in 2011. Under his leadership, HSV’s website was conferred the People’s Choice Award for the best sports website in 2011.

HSV’s northern rival, SV Werder Bremen, has meanwhile set up an entirely new e-business structure, which covers everything from CRM to ticketing and cashless payments to club web TV. SV Werder Bremen’s Media Director, Tino Polster, will report back on the opportunities the online marketing restructuring offers the club.

What’s more, leading representatives from other sporting disciplines besides football will also take to the stage during the “New Media” forum. SPONSORs has successfully acquired Frank Bohmann, Managing Director of the Toyota Handball Bundesliga, for the event for example. The 47-year-old shall consider how sport can take advantage of the new digital channels.

Further speakers in the “New Media” forum:

    • Marko Beens, former Managing Director, German Volleyball League
    • Oliver Ciesla, Managing Director, The Sportsman Media Group
    • Rainer Geier, Managing Director, LAOLA1.tv
    • Thomas Schweda, Head of Sponsoring & SME Division, Unicredit Group

    Optimal networking conditions guaranteed

Hamburg, 25 April 2012 – Participants not only have an exciting programme to look forward to at the 7th SPONSORs Sports Media Summit: emphasis is also placed on networking. The organisers have intentionally scheduled lengthier breaks between sessions to ensure participants have sufficient time for informal discussions.

Upon conclusion of the Main Stage programme, there will also be the opportunity to retire to the ISS Dome’s spacious lounge area to exchange with the media industry’s top decision-makers. We therefore highly recommend event participants depart on Friday morning rather than on Thursday evening to allow full advantage to be taken of the interactive conference day with fascinating case studies and the very best networking opportunities.

Media Broadcast once again an Exhibition Partner

Hamburg, 25 April 2012 – For the second year in a row, Media Broadcast, Europe’s largest full-service provider for the broadcast and media industries, is to use the conference to showcase its expertise to a wider specialist audience.

The international company plans, installs and operates multimedia transmission platforms for television and radio companies based on modern transmitter, cable and satellite networks. Media Broadcast has already successfully implemented its extensive range of services at the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Athletics held in Berlin, the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany and 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Media Broadcast looks forward to meeting event participants in person at its stand in the exhibition area and to further expanding its sports media network.

Hamburg, 20 April 2012 – In five weeks, the doors of the ISS Dome in Düsseldorf will open for the 7th SPONSORs Sports Media Summit. At the same time, in order to increase the quality of participants still further, selected representatives of the sports rights holders and sponsors from all over Europe have been invited to the Sports Media Summit after consultation with the premium partners.

The jury has selected the five most innovative projects from the wealth of applications received from renowned media applicants, companies and organisations. Brian Sullivan on the future of Sky Deutschland

Hamburg, 11 April 2012 – Ever since Brian Sullivan headed up Sky Deutschland as its CEO, things have been on the up for the pay television broadcaster. Over the past year, Sky has for the first time passed the three million subscriber mark putting its move towards profitable figures within reach. It has also received a financial boost from the News Corporation totalling 300 million euros for product innovation and growth.

Brian Sullivan is a veteran of the pay television industry, having more than 20 years of professional experience in the USA and Europe. After two years at Sky Deutschland, the American now turns to the SPONSORs Sports Media Summit to talk about his experiences with the pay television broadcaster and to provide an insight into the future plans at Sky. Since the invitation to tender for broadcasting rights in the German Football League has passed, this is a lecture that sports media experts cannot afford to miss.

Strong national and international media partners

Hamburg, 11 April 2012 – The SPONSORs Sports Media Summit can also be congratulated on this year's strong media partners. Distinguished names in British sports business media, Sportcal and SportsPro Media, as well as Live-Production.tv, a leading information platform in the broadcasting and production industries, emphasise the strong international interest in the Sports Media Summit with their dedication.

The strong media presence at the Summit once again continues on a national level, with support from the sports information service (SID), Medien Bulletin and Result Consulting.

    Reduced travel costs with Lufthansa

Hamburg, 11 April 2012 – The organisers of the SPONSORs Sports Media Summit are pleased to be able to offer all conference delegates reduced costs for their journeys to and from the Summit. This is possible thanks to the support of our mobility partner Deutsche Lufthansa offering heavily discounted ticket prices – exclusively for the Summit's delegates, visitors, exhibitors and invited guests.

Sullivan, Lenz & co.: Programme now online

Hamburg, 23 March 2012 – Available from today: the programme for the 7th SPONSORs Sports Media Summit taking place in Düsseldorf’s ISS Dome on 19 May has now been set. Participants can once again expect top national and international speakers and plenty of new food for thought.

Niersbach, Seifert, Sullivan, Le Lay and Raff – the list of notable speakers from previous years is impressive. And this will once again be the case in 2012: among those to have confirmed their attendance is Champions League co-founder and marketer Jürgen Lenz, one of the leading representatives of the sports business industry. He will be joined by major industry players such as Alistair Kirkwood (Managing Director, NFL UK), Brian Sullivan (CEO, Sky Germany), and Clemens Prokop (President, German Athletics Federation). What’s more, 17-year-old Philipp Riederle will share his insights into the media consumption of so-called digital natives.

Full details of all speakers, the Main Stage events, and topics to be covered in the Special Interest forums can be found here.

SPONSORs Sports Media Summit even more exclusive

Hamburg, 23 March 2012 – So as to further enhance the conference’s position as a driving force within the industry, the proportion of clubs, leagues, associations and sponsors in attendance at the event is to be increased. In cooperation with its partners, SPONSORS has hand-picked 100 decision-makers from pertinent fields to invite to the SPONSORS Sports Media Summit. 100 tickets have also been allocated to the partners and speakers, meaning that the decision-maker quota will exceed the 69 per cent achieved in the previous year. Restriction to a total of 300 participants means that just 100 tickets are freely available for sale.

Given that the 25 early-bird tickets have now been snapped up, just 75 tickets still remain.

    All four Premium partnerships extended

Hamburg, 23 March 2012 – The organiser couldn’t be paid a better compliment: all four Premium Partners have extended their involvement in the SPONSORS Sports Media Summit. After the Premium partnership packages were all sold out in 2011 for the first time, the companies’ decision to extend their commitment is a clear indication that the event is based on long-standing partnerships of trust, and enjoys an excellent reputation among the industry’s leading companies.

Alone Deutsche Telekom, law firm CMS Hasche Sigle and sports media enterprise Kicker online/Fussball.de boast a 14-year presence at the SPONSORS Sports Media Summit. Last year, SPONSORS welcomed sports marketing agency The Sportsman to this exclusive circle. The Munich-based agency owns sports rights trader The Sportsman, web TV platform Laola1.tv and online marketing agency Gramercy Global Media, and is thus the perfect complement to the three long-standing partners.

Philipp Riederle on the world of digital natives and future business models

Hamburg, 21 March 2012 – The SPONSORs Sports Media Summit is renowned for tracking down topics and information of interest from outside of the industry, and for inviting speakers, who at first glance do not seem relevant to sports business. Philipp Riederle’s presentation will provide the infamous bigger picture: the 17-year-old student, podcaster and young entrepreneur knows all about the media consumption of the so-called digital natives from his own experience. Behaviour that may well seem strange to the many decision-makers aged over 35, but that will have a lasting impact on future sports media business models.

Top speaker Jürgen Lenz confirms attendance

Hamburg, 14 March 2012 –  The SPONSORs Sports Media Summit will soon be upon us, and a whole host of intriguing, high-profile speakers have already confirmed their attendance for the event taking place in Düsseldorf on May 24. The organiser is delighted to have also won Jürgen Lenz as a speaker.

Lenz is the man who founded the UEFA Champions League together with the UEFA President and General Secretary of the time (Lennart Johansson and Gerhard Aigner), and business partner Klaus Hempel. Lenz recognised early on that major sporting events are the ideal platform for international brands. Thus the former Adidas Marketing Director developed the marketing concept for the UEFA Champions League with his TEAM partner, Klaus Hempel. This pioneering model for creation of a brand and the optimal added value for a sporting competition is copied time and time again by other sporting disciplines to this very day.
